Project Overview

AOLS was appointed to design and implement a new 11,500m2 distribution centre for Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions in Perth, Western Australia. The project included the complete warehouse fit-out, storage system design, material handling equipment selection and operational systems integration.

Designed as the primary distribution hub for Western Australia, the facility supports approximately 11,000 active SKUs while delivering improved operational efficiency, increased storage capacity and faster order fulfilment. The completed development also achieved a prestigious 6-Star Green Star environmental accreditation.

The Challenge

Sandvik required a modern distribution centre capable of supporting increasing product volumes while improving inventory accuracy, storage density and operational efficiency.

The facility needed to accommodate a diverse product range - from standard palletised inventory through to oversized mining equipment and long drill rods - while integrating warehouse automation, transport systems and sustainable operating practices into one cohesive operation.

AOLS managed the complete design and implementation of the distribution centre, including:

Warehouse layout and operational design
Storage system specification
Material handling equipment selection
Warehouse automation integration
Warehouse Management System (WMS) integration
Transport Management System (TMS) integration
Operational workflow design
Project implementation and commissioning

The warehouse was designed around a combination of conventional and automated storage solutions to maximise efficiency and future scalability.

Key storage systems included pallet racking, cantilever racking, floor stacking zones, a two-level longspan shelving mezzanine designed for future expansion, Vertical Lift Machine (VLM) towers and an eight-zone conveyor routing system with outbound sortation and despatch accumulation lanes.

Lithium-ion powered material handling equipment was selected throughout the operation to improve sustainability while reducing maintenance requirements and energy consumption.

Integrated Warehouse Management and Transport Management Systems provided complete visibility across inventory, order fulfilment and transport operations.

The completed facility significantly increased Sandvik's operational capability through improved warehouse automation, higher storage density and streamlined inventory management.

The integrated design reduced handling times, improved picking accuracy and created a flexible distribution environment capable of supporting future growth while achieving industry-leading environmental performance through its 6-Star Green Star accreditation.

Mining operations depend on reliable equipment availability and responsive supply chains.

By integrating storage systems, warehouse automation and operational technology into one purpose-built facility, AOLS delivered a distribution centre that improves operational performance today while providing the flexibility required to support Sandvik's long-term growth.
